5 Common Sleep Problems & How to Solve Them

By Miss Millennia Magazine February 24, 2016

Getting a good night’s sleep is important for our bodies to function properly. A restful night’s sleep will help us get through the day with ease, whereas a disturbed night’s sleep can leave us feeling grumpy and drowsy, among other things. There may be a number of reasons for the problems you’re experiencing with your sleep. The following problems are all very common, but they can be solved. Let’s take a look.

1. Bruxism

Bruxism is the act of grinding and clenching the jaw as you sleep. You might not even know that you do this. However, if you wake in the morning with a headache, a sore jaw, and feel irritable, there’s a chance this is your problem. Take a look at your teeth; do they look worn? This is a definite sign you’re grinding and clenching. Some people do know that they do this but they just can’t seem to stop. Try the following methods:

– Start a wind down routine before bed by staying away from electronics and bright lights.
– Read a book to relax.
– Drink a cup of nighttime tea.
– Practice deep breathing exercises to clear your head.
– Try not to worry.
– Invest in a mouth guard.

2. Insomnia

Insomnia can be temporary or fairly permanent, depending on the person. It’s when a person can’t seem to get rest, no matter what they do. To try to solve insomnia you can:

– Reduce stress and anxiety by practicing meditation.
– Get some exercise.
– Cut out caffeine.
– Avoid drugs.
– See a sleep specialist.

3. Snoring

Snoring might not bother you, but you can bet it bothers your partner. Believe it or not, snoring isn’t always as harmless as people make it out to be. It can be down to something called sleep apnea, which is when the airways become temporarily blocked as you sleep. As you can imagine, this can be very dangerous. To stop snoring, try:

– Losing weight.
– Elevating your head.
– Using a snoring mouthpiece.
– Wearing a special mask.
– Sleeping on your side.
– Having an operation.

4. Restless Legs Syndrome

This problem is an uncontrollable urge to move your legs and arms due to strange sensations as you sleep. Attempt to stop by:

– Not smoking.
– Avoiding stimulants such as caffeine, especially before bed.
– Exercising.
– Going to bed at the same time each night.

5. Nightmares

Some may think only children get nightmares, but the truth is all adults get nightmares at one time or another. However, you shouldn’t consider this to be normal if they are deeply affecting your sleep quality by having them regularly. There could be an underlying problem causing your nightmares. Try the following:

– Take a look at the medication you are taking.
– Exercise.
– Relax with yoga and meditation.
– Go to sleep and wake up at a regular time each day.

Try these things before bed and you should keep all bedtime problems at bay. Now, get some rest!
