DIY Eucalyptus Scented Bags

By Cortni M March 25, 2015

I have a crafty little DIY project to share with you guys today. It’s super easy and you don’t have to be very crafty at all…that’s the best part.

This year I had an overabundance of eucalyptus in my garden. This was pretty surprising because I barely grew a whole 3 inch stem of eucalyptus last year…and this year I had a whole forest.

I didn’t quite know what to do with it all, so I decided to dry it. I hung some in the shower for a nice minty refreshing effect. The rest I hung upside down in various parts of our house. It was kind of ridiculous, but it smelled amazing. There are still quite a bit of them hanging around. The time had come, much to the joy of my fiance, I’m sure, to do something with all of those plants!

If you don’t have access to dried eucalyptus that took over your garden during the summer, you can find dried eucalyptus in many places to order off the internet. Just make sure you know what you’re getting and it isn’t artificial! You could use all different kinds of herbs or flowers, like lavender or lemon balm. Pairing them with the same essential oils would make the scent last longer. This craft is also probably more suitable to do in the summer, but I already talked about in the gift guide, so I wanted to share it now…We’ll just have to revisit it in the warmer months.

Other than the eucalyptus leaves you’ll need some small breathable bags, paint and eucalyptus essential oils, if you’d like to make the scent a little stronger. I didn’t use the essential oil because my leaves were still pretty aromatic.

I found these burlap bags at michaels, I used acrylic paints for the outside. I used and even mixture of Martha Stewart paints in pea shoot, hummingbird, and Scottish Highlands. What ridiculous paint color names…You can paint the bags whatever pattern you like, or even leave them plain. I like the shape of the eucalyptus leaf, so I painted that on the front.

I tried to use a leaf to stamp the paint onto the bag and that did not work at all. So I just freely painted the shape. Make sure you put paper inbetween the sides of the bag so the paint doesn’t bleed through.

While the paint is drying on the bags. I pulled the leaves off the eucalyptus and threw them into the food processor. Don’t use the stems, I tried that too and it didn’t work. Pulse until they are finely chopped up. It smells so delicious!

Fill the bags when they are dry. Drop a few droplets of essential oil into the bags, if you’d like. And that’s it! I then put them in small plastic baggies so that all of the scent didn’t dissipate.

They are great for hanging in your car, keeping in your gym bag, in your shoes, or sock drawer…really anywhere stinky! I’ll be stuffing some stockings with these this year…probably spoiled the surprise a bit. Oh well!
